In Caorle in the summer, there’s nothing better than sitting on the beach and savouring a cool drink in the sunshine, surrounded by greenery and the clean water in the blue sea. But what if it rains? What is there to do in Caorle on a rainy day?
Don’t worry: the bad weather won’t ruin your holiday. Caorle is beautiful even when the heavens open and there’s plenty to do on a rainy day. It can be a great chance to explore the old fishing village and go on a fascinating journey full of history and culture.
Caorle’s history stretches back thousands of years, as shown by the numerous exceptional monuments, which are well worth a visit.
As you stroll past the narrow streets, little squares and traditional shops in the old town centre, you’ll fall in love with the hues of the multi-coloured old fishermen’s houses for which it’s renowned.
If you’re looking for things to do in Caorle on a rainy day, here are a few tips. Make sure you see the beautiful Romanesque Cathedral of Santo Stefano Protomartire, which dates back to 1038 and has a nave and two side aisles. Inside you can admire a golden altarpiece that was given to the town by Caterina Cornaro, the Queen of Cyprus, after she was saved from a shipwreck off the coast of Caorle. Next to it is a magnificent 11th century bell tower that looks down on the town from above.
Nothing can compare to the enchanting experience of sheltering from the rain under an umbrella as you walk along what’s considered “one of the most beautiful promenades in the Northern Adriatic”. It’s like an open-air sculpture gallery thanks to the creations that have been carved into the rocks by Italian and international artists. Caorle is renowned worldwide for its delightful views.
At the end of the promenade is the Sanctuary of the Madonna dell’Angelo: a charming little 18th century chapel by the sea. Inside is a heavy marble throne on which – legend has it – a statue of the Virgin Mary was found floating in the sea.
Lots of initiatives are organized all year round to keep visitors entertained, including art exhibitions, concerts and sporting events.
If you like shopping, as well as wandering around the streets in the town centre, you can head to the numerous malls near Caorle, either to buy things or simply to do a little window shopping. Many of the shopping centres have special play areas to keep your children entertained.
As you can see, there’s plenty to do in Caorle when it rains. Whether you want to embark on a cultural journey, go shopping or simply stroll through the narrow, Venetian-style streets, Caorle can cater to all needs. In both the sunshine and the rain, Caorle will cast its spell on you.
